Final Jury!

Welcome to the final jury!!! Before telling what happened in the final, I would like to express my feelings about this semester. This semester was a challenging one because of site’s linearity and location. Despite of this, we enjoyed while analysing Dorsoduro and designing our own buildings. During semester, my designed intensions had changed. I started with contrast concept. After all, my concept turned to linearity and experience concept of Dorsoduro. Although my design intensions had changed, I dealt with my design intensions. As we know, design will never end. Of course, our designs are not finished yet. We will revise them for our portfolios. However, we all finished this semester successfully!! I would like to thank to all my instructors for their supports, attentions, critiques and best wishes.

So, let’s see what happened!

As we understood in Dorsoduro analysis, Dorsoduro is a social place. Throughout a street, you can encounter with galleries, exhibitions, courtyards, piazzas, basketball courts and so on. When I consider this feature, I wanted to design a linear path in our site. While going throughout this path, all programs that were given us can be experienced. While designing path, I chose 3 main entrance points which located in south, north and east part. The main axis located in during north and south direction. When you entire the site in south direction which is the exact main entrance, firstly you will encounter with gift shop, entrance, management. Later on, while continuing walking, you will see mirrored hall, fitness hall, tennis, basketball-volleyball court and their courtyard on the right side. In the left side, you will see benches for people and classroom areas. While keeping walking, you will see open airt courts and running track after these programs. This is a huge courtyard which locates between my building and the existing dormitory. In the end, you will encounter with a new courtyard which is surrounded by recreation areas. You can see exhibition, climbing wall, café and lounge area and accommodation on the top. While designing my structure, despite of the verticality of the Dorsoduro and Venice buildings, I created a huge base. In addition to this base, I created extrude masses which are vertical and huge. To provide a relationship between my structure and the around, I created some openings on the walls which are on the boundaries.  Wanted to provide the experience of Dorsoduro in my design. I hope that you will like my project! Below, you can find the presentation of it. Have fun!!! 😊

PS: While uploading, the colors were affected by a reason that I could not find out yet. This problem will be solved.

Be safe 🙂

Jury 3

Hey hey heyyyy!! We are sooo close to the final. This was the last jury before final submission. As you remember from my jury 2 post, I used triangles. However, after that, I got some critics. As I learned that, creating contrast consept is not only about form, but it is also about functions and their responses. So, I tried to reflect the changing masses by creating courtyards and extracting masses from a base. While designing the sports center, I found many references and below, you can find what they are. My decisions regarding programmatic locations are nearly same. Just, the intersection points, massive approaches and connection ideas changed. I tried to reflect the contrast idea by exploding masses, designing courtyards and making them landmarks. This jury is a closed-jury. We could not get any comment about our projects yet. We are waiting for our studio time. Let’s see what will happen and what will change in my project!!! Below, you can find my jury presentation. Thank youuu!! 🙂

Jury 2

Hello all! After pre-jury1, I got many critics. In the last critic, I decided to use contrast, like in Louvre Museum. However, I did not know how to design it. So, I just used a pyramid to reflect the contrast idea. So, why did I want to use contrast? In the analysis part of the semester, we learned that Dorsoduro has many social areas because of the student population. So, while designing the sports center, I decided to use different shapes and forms to emphasize the recreation areas. Around this triangular part, I put my sports center facilities. I also wanted to create a contrast between the building and historical texture of our site. In addition to these, I put my accomodation part to the most silent part of the site.

Below, you can find my jurt presentation. Thank you 🙂

Below, you can find the zoom version of plans and sections.

Initial Ideas-Step1

We started to design our own sports complex in Venice. As the beginning, I analysed programmatic relationships as space and user types and spatial adjacency. Also, I created the zones for programs. This is my first attempt. See you the next critic session!!! 🙂

Analysis before Jury-1

After pavilion design, we were wanted to study on Dorsoduro, Venice. A specific area was given us to study and analyse. For jury-1, we started to analyse the site that was given to us. However, in this stage, we studied in three parts; façade, plan and urban.

  • In façade part, we considered elevations, fenestrations, textures, canal perspectives and urban sections. Also, we designed a façade in an area that we wanted.
  • In plan part, we studied on figure ground, hard and soft landscape, building block types, plots, open and closed spaces. Also, we designed a plan for Venice.
  • In urban part, we studied on urban patterns, flows and functions. We analysed how the site relates to Dorsoduro and Venice at large. Besides, we analysed the hierarchy of urban spaces from public and private with the surrounding functions. Also, we considered the environmental condition to understand the urban life in Venice. As a design, we were wanted design new paths, gatherings and accesses by regarding flows and functions.
See you on Jury-1!!!!!

Pavilion Design / Warm-up Project

After a long time, hello again! This semester, I am taking ARCH301 course again! In this semester, we will be working on Venice. Before starting to analyse about what the architectural approaches are, we were wanted to design a pavilion as warm-up project. Let’s begin!!!

In 2014, there was 12th architectural biennial in Venice. This biennial was regarding Fundamentals that belongs to Rem Koolhaas. Fundamentals represents the important elements of architecture, such as floor, wall, ceiling etc. We were wanted to create a pavilion for this biennial on the waterfront of the Giardini. This pavilion will be informing people about biennial and be representing the fundamentals that we choose.

Photos given below is about our warm-up project. My friends and I designed a pavilion with layers of timber. We mainly use some Rem Koolhaas’ fundamentals, such as stairs, doors, walls, ceiling etc. Also, we consider the circulation in a detailed way. The area given to us has 4 different routes. While using fundamentals, we tried to guide people from one route to the other. Besides, in front of the pavilion, there is a canal view. People can experience it, while the others are experiencing the park on the back side. We tried to create a space which is related to main the canal view, park view and circulation routes, especially the route that guides you through the biennial site.

Arch301- First Prejury!

Hello dear lovely people! This semester, we will study for Arch301! In previous blog writings, we studied on regionalism and Gaziantep. Now, our first prejury ended. Let’s see what we did for first Prejury after Gaziantep trip and what we did in first Prejury!

Before perjury, we analysed the site according to what we obtained.  Second site was given us to analyse it with street section. We drew some sketches about buildings, their relations to each other.

Some sketches;

Later, we mixed our information with municipality’s information. So, we drew architectural drawings with some details.

Some drawings from prejury presentation:

After this step, we were wanted to analyse the site with its analysis. This was called SWOT analysis. In this analysis, we considered both opportunity, threat, strength and weakness.

After these steps, we were given a design program sheet. This sheet includes many programmatic elements such as exhibition halls, kitchen labs, classrooms and accommodation. We were wanted to consider these programs and create various institution design ideas for our site. We created some diagrams for our design idea.

Diagrams:

bu_prejury1_streetsectionpdf (1)-12.jpg

bu_prejury1_streetsectionpdf (1)-14.jpg

We tried to consider SWOT analysis, also. According to SWOT analysis, we tried to turn weakness to strength and threat to opportunity. For example, the topography of site and level differences are problem for people. In our design, we wanted to control topography. So, people can use site more. To control the topography, structure can be buried or in some parts, ground/soil can be added. Also, people try to use our site to go to another street. We wanted to create a wide side walk that is a link between two street. Then, people can use this side walk safely and also, its wideness can provide people to experience more activities than what the other narrow streets provide.

A sketch for structure;

srergg.jpg

According to our instructors, we should create more diagrams for structure itself. Also, we should create various sketches and diagrams for its possible positions in the site. Then, we could explain our ideas more detailed.

So, the first perjury was like that! See you in the other blog posts and juries!

TRIP: GAZİANTEP

This semester, we will study on Gaziantep center. Before our trip, we studied on regionalism. We examined in detail. Later, we started our trip. Firstly, we went to Zeugma Mosaic Museum. Mosaics that were found were from Zeugma ancient city. They belonged to 2. and 3. Centuries A.D. or older.

In the end of the day, we went to sites that we would study. The center was divided into two. Also, the all groups were divided into two. The second site was given to my group. Also, we were given an analysis approach. We would study on ‘Street section’. In our second day, we started to analyse the site deeply. We drew a lot of sketches. As a street section group, we considered topography and the height of the buildings. Our instructors provided us Municipality drawings. So, we could study more accurate. As we guessed and understood, we will design a culinary institution for Gaziantep. For that, while analysing the site, we also thought about what could be designed for this area.

‘JANSEN and ANKARA’ Exhibition

In 1928, Prof. Dr. Hermann Jansen won the competition for Ankara Nazım İmar Planı. In 1932, his plan designs were applied through Ankara. He considered mainly housing problems and workers residentials areas. His design included human more. Jansen planned the city with the beginning. There are some changes in Jansen Plan. However, his plan guide Ankara’s improvement. In these days, Goethe Institute is organising an exhibition regarding Jansen and Ankara. Below, you can find his drawings regarding his Ankara city plan.

10 Points of the Architecture of Regionalism

Before being an examination through ten points of regionalism, we need to know what regionalism is. Architectural regionalism is related to the context and customs of designing buildings in a region. These structures should be designed by considering climate, geology, geography and topography of the region. According to the regionalism, a speculative manifesto was organized. This manifesto has ten points. These ten points are regarding issues that should be considered while designing. These ten points create a ground for the design. These are significant points.

Vernacular form can be considered as the local structures. These were created by architects who are not architects According to the needs and conditions, these structures were shaped. On the other hand, critical regionalism is different. Aesthetics was more important. So, not only the structure, but also the design is important. Also, modern movement has impacted the regionalism. However, post-modernist movement and regionalism were tried to mix and this trial did not work. After this trial, modern movement was accepted as a main movement again. After all these effects, pioneer architects decided that defining the notion was not to discover a new thing but not to repeat the same actions as they did before.

In addition, the reality of region should be considered. Critical regionalism is based on true limits and institutional status of the region. All of conditions should be considered, such as climate, topography etc. There are two interrelated factors for the significance of regionalism. The notion of discourse and the cultivation of client in a profound sense are these two important factors. Also, region should be examined and experienced. All analysis and institutions should be regarded for the regionalism.

Additionally, contrasts are important for the architectural regionalism. Space and place difference should be regarded because these two terms generate a characteristic pattern in the design. Also, information and experience are related to what we perceive as region. As a valuable peace of data, these terms should work together. To reach the coherent whole, observers should regard all the system as a lock-key system. All aspects should work properly. Contrasts help to define the whole. In addition to the contrasts, typology and topography creates the main issues for the design ideas. However, thanks to them, ecological, climatological and symbolic perspectives can be considered. These conditions are mixed with topographic conditions. By the help of these superimposition, sustainable structures can be provided.

Architectonic and scenographic conditions are important, too. Architectonic is based on the genesis of the construction, such as durability, gravity and all conditions. Scenographic is based on atmosphere, perspective and the nature of the construction. This can be regarded as imagistic reception and perception of the built form. We try to consider nature but, nature is not only topography in the site. Climate, light and other conditions are the natural conditions. Artificial designs are created by considering the natural conditions. That’s why, although natural and artificial conditions are different from each other, they create a harmony. This harmony creates the design.

Visual and tactile oppositions also contribute the architectural regionalism. This stems from the perception levels. For experiencing the architecture, optic nerve plays a huge role. Not only visual, but also the other senses are significant. With senses, air movement, acoustics, temperature and texture are understood. The oppositions of senses generate a strong relation to perceive the architecture deeply.
